Local and Children’s Courts

Steve understands the pressures of these Courts and is able to swiftly progress matters to the satisfaction of both clients and the bench.  He has the expertise to conduct all types of procedures in these Courts, including bail/release applications, defended hearings, committal hearings and related applications for the attendance of witnesses for cross-examination, section 32 applications and other mental health diversions, fitness inquiries, stay applications, sentencing exercises and breach of bond proceedings.

Steve has a current and maintains an up to date understanding of the criminal law in respect of all matters that are routinely dealt with by the Local and Children’s Courts, including assaults, stalking and intimidation, indecent assault, obscene exposures, choking, larceny, robbery, fraud, break and entering, bushfire and arson offences, offences relating to participation in criminal groups, escaping from lawful custody, supply/possession of prohibited drugs and restricted substances, cultivation, driving in a manner dangerous, police pursuits, failures to report under Child Protection legislation, possession of firearms and prohibited weapons and summary offences such as offensive language and offensive behaviour.

In most Local and Children’s Court matters, Steve is able to accept instructions directly from defendants. This however depends on the work to be done in a particular matter, as some tasks may not fall within the scope of barristers’ work. He is only too happy to discuss with you whether your case is matter that can be done on a direct access basis and will provide the appropriate advice and direction.
